Summer 2019
Prof. Paul Saltzmann was posthumously awarded the John H. Kane Loyalty Award by Anderson University Office of Alumni Engagement. Prof. Saltzmann passed away May 17, 2019, following a record 60-year mathematics teaching career.
Prof. Carrie Clay won the Site Manager of the Year Award for her service and dedication as faculty advisor for College Mentors for Kids.
Dr. Jennifer Coy is now a Certified Ethical Hacker, having passed the CEH exam by demonstrating her ability to “look for weaknesses and vulnerabilities in target systems” and use “the same knowledge and tools as a malicious hacker, but in a lawful and legitimate manner…”
Dr. Courtney Taylor presented “Charles Babbage and Mathematical Aspects of the Miraculous” at the biennial meeting of the Association of Christians in the Mathematical Sciences held May 29-June 1 at Indiana Wesleyan University.
Dr. Cara Miller earned her PhD in English Composition with a concentration in rhetoric and composition from Ball State University. She successfully defended her dissertation titled, “Discovering Moments of Disconnect Throughout the Process of Response and Revision: A Multiple Case Study.”
Dr. Nathan Willowby was named Church of God Historian by the General Assembly of the Church of God.
As part of a continuing series for local residents, Dr. Jennifer Coy and Dr. Michael Frank spoke at the Falls Park Community Building (Pendleton) on the topic of Anderson University’s cybersecurity and national security studies programs.
Dr. Anna Stumpf presented “Discover if your campus culture evolved enough to create social media engagement and brand communities” at Canada’s College and University Digital Marketing Conference held July 8-9, 2019, in Saskatchewan.
The Rev. Dr. Kimberly Majeski spoke at the Carolina Ministries Church of God Convention in July, and at the National Association Church of God Camp Meeting in August. Also, in January Dr. Majeski launched Preacher Girl School, a dynamic online community and digital course for female preachers and justice leaders.
Prof. Gert Kumi served as an artist faculty member at the InterHarmony International Music Festival in Acqui Terme, Italy, working with students, performing in artist faculty concerts, and teaching a master class. The festival attracts more than 300 students from North America, South America, Europe, and Asia.
Prof. Earlene Masi co-authored “The Health Benefits of a Pedometer-Based 100,000 Steps/Week Physical Activity Program” (with Leonard Kaminsky and James Peterman) which was recently published in the Journal of Science in Sport and Exercise.
Dr. Ray Sylvester published “Viewpoint: How brand licensing influences popular music acts,” as well as “Product placement within your own product: The NFL’s brand communications ‘Super Bowl Lll’ strategy,” a case study with input and support from Dr. Anna Stumpf and Dr. Brock Vaughters, in Marketing Communications: touchpoints, sharing and disruption, 8th ed. (Fill & Turnbull, 2019).
Dr. Rebecca Chappell performed with The Who on their “Moving On Tour!” (May 18, Ruoff Center, Noblesville), and with Weird Al Yankovic on his “The Strings Attached Tour” (July 2, Foellinger Theatre, Ft. Wayne; and Aug. 29, White River State Park Lawn, Indianapolis).
Prof. Samantha Yoo completed her Master of Fine Arts in Visual Arts/Graphic Design from Marywood University (Pennsylvania). Her project was entitled, “The Beauty of Korean (Hangul): Korean Typography.”
September 2019
Dr. Kevin Radaker presented his dramatic program as Winston Churchill a total of five times in Los Angeles and Pleasanton, California, on July 7 and 9; Ann Arbor, Michigan, on July 24; and Greeley, Colorado, on August 9. Dr. Radaker presented his dramatic program as Henry David Thoreau on August 5 and 7 in Greeley, Colorado, and delivered two lectures on Thoreau on August 6 and 9 in Greeley as well. Radaker performed as C. S. Lewis at Church at the Crossing in Indianapolis on Sept. 7.
Dr. Tammy Reedy-Strother will present her paper, “A Growing Problem: Disparities in Placement and Compensation of Clergy Women in the Kentucky Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church” at the annual meeting of the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion and the Religious Research Association (SSSR+RRA) to be held Oct. 25-27, 2019, in St. Louis, Missouri.
Prof. David Coolidge was appointed as Regional Director to the Musical Theatre Educator’s Alliance for 2020-2023 Executive Board.
Dr. Maria Scott announced two additional titles in the Interdisciplinary Studies in Diasporas book series with Peter Lang International Academic Publishers:

Dr. Scott also announced Volume 8 of the Interdisciplinary Journal of Portuguese Diaspora Studies.
Dr. Rebecca Chappell recorded “Festival of Carols” with the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra and Indianapolis Symphonic Choir to be released early this November on Maxos Records. Also, her world music ensemble, INDYKLEZ, performed for the Lafayette Symphony B-side concert series at Carnahan Hall on Sept. 12 and was featured at Global Fest Indy on Sept. 21.
Dr. Joani Brandon presented three sessions and also served as elementary/vocal clinician for the Indiana Music Education Association’s Muncie Symposium held Sept. 19. Dr. Brandon will present at the AOSA (American Orff-Schulwerk Association) professional development conference in Salt Lake City scheduled for Nov. 20-23 — two sessions of “Sing, Say, Dance, Play: Orff-Schulwerk and First Steps in Music (Feierabend)” with Rachel Grimbsby, Craig Knapp, and Chris Tranberg; and a session of “Rhythmisch-melodische Ubung (1931) – Pieces and History” with Peggy McCreary. Dr. Brandon serves as president-elect of AOSA’s History Committee.

Dr. Kevin Radaker presented four lectures on “C. S. Lewis and His Writings during the month of September at Church at the Crossing in Indianapolis. Dr. Radaker also presented his dramatic portrayal of Winston Churchill (World War II version) at the Porter County Public Library in Valparaiso, Indiana, on Oct. 15.
Dr. Cara Miller presented her research on faculty response entitled, “Negotiating Conflict on Student Drafts: A Comparison of Student and Instructor Perspectives” at the Indiana College English Association (ICEA) 2019 Conference on Oct. 18 at the University of Indianapolis.
Dr. Nathan Willowby presented at the annual meeting of the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion in St. Louis, Missouri, Oct. 25-27. Dr. Willowby’s project, Influences on Church of God (Anderson) Congregational ‘Missional’ Giving was presented in a session titled, “The Lilly Endowment’s National Initiative to Address Economic Challenges Facing Pastoral Leaders I: Congregational Finances.”
Prof. Toya Lutterman completed her Master of Science in Nursing degree at Western Governor’s University. Her capstone project was titled, “Improving Transition to Practice in Undergraduate Senior-Level Nursing Students.”
November 2019
Dr. Lolly Bargerstock, Dr. Sarah Neal, and Prof. Lisa Pay presented at the North American Association of Christians in Social Work (NACSW) annual conference held Nov. 7-10 in Indianapolis. Their presentation was titled, “Teaching Each Other: Using Inter-Professional Simulations with Social Work and Nursing Students.”
Dr. Kevin Radaker offered his dramatic portrayal of Winston Churchill (World War II version) at the Hoosier Village Retirement Community in Zionsville (Oct. 29) and at the Hanco*ck County Public Library in Greenfield (Nov. 18).
Prof. Adam Waller conducted an All-District Jazz Band Ensemble on Nov. 16-17 culminating in a community performance in Pendleton, Indiana. The ensemble was comprised of select students from ten Indiana high schools in Grant, Hamilton, and Madison Counties.

Dr. John Millis and Dr. Courtney Taylor collaborated on an article, “Areas of a Total Eclipse” which was published in The College Mathematics Journal (Vol. 50, 2019 – Issue 5, published online 11/15/19).
Dr. Abigail Post’s article, “Why can’t a woman be more like a man? Female leaders in crisis bargaining,” was published in International Interactions: Empirical and Theoretical Research in International Relations (Vol. 46, 2020 – Issue 1, published online 11/20/19).
Dr. Brian Dirck has been recognized by The Lincoln Group of New York with its 2019 Award of Achievement for his book, The Black Heavens: Abraham Lincoln and Death. Dr. Dirck will travel to New York in February for the award presentation and to serve as guest speaker.
January 2020
Dr. Melanie Peddicord’s manuscript (co-authored with Gregory Kaufinger) entitled, “Accounting Standards Update 2014-09 and the comparability of unexercised contractual rights: An ex ante analysis” was selected by the Academic and Business Research Institute (AABRI) for publication in the Journal of Finance and Accountancy. The peer-reviewed journal has an acceptance rate of less than 40%.
Dr. Elizabeth Imafuji presented “Prayer Writing as a Component of Self Care” at the inaugural Conference on Writing and Well-Being held Jan. 9-12 at the University of Arizona in Tucson.
Dr. Brian Dirck was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to teach American history in Japan during the 2020-21 academic year at a university in the Tokyo area. (1/13/20)
Prof. Jeff Siemon presented the webinar, “OCLC Community Insights: Selecting Open Access Knowledge Base collections for Discovery.” The recorded webinar, presented to 158 registrants on January 27, may be accessed at HERE and the accompanying slides HERE.

Prof. Stefanie Leiter reports that the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) awarded the national Pacesetter Chapter Recognition for the month of January to the Anderson University chapter. This is the first time AU has received this honor, competing against large state universities and elite private colleges.
Prof. Jeff Siemon was selected for the Indiana State Library advisory committee on INSPIRE databases RFP, evaluation, and purchase. INSPIRE will award a new $8.8 million, four-year contract to provide journal databases to K-12 and higher education in Indiana. Anderson University receives free access to more than 8,000 full-text journals through INSPIRE, included in databases such as Academic Search Premier, Business Source Complete, and Gale Health and Medicine. Prof. Erich Yetter’s article, “Strategies for Staging Classical Ballet Repertoire,” was published February 24 in Dance Education in Practice (Vol. 6, 2020 – Issue 1), a peer-reviewed, official journal of the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO). Print ISSN: 2373-4833 Online ISSN: 2373-4841.
Dr. Cara Miller and Prof. Elizabeth Ranfeld (along with another colleague from Ball State) were accepted for a panel presentation entitled, “Not as Common as We Think: Decoding the Assignment Sheet” at the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) which was scheduled for March in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but was canceled due to the coronavirus.

Dr. Gilbert Lozano and Dr. Kimberly Majeski were both contributors and served on the editorial committee for Dr. Robert Branson’s book, Global Wesleyan Encyclopedia of Biblical Theology, released March 2 by Foundry Publishing. Dr. Lozano’s article was entitled “Love” and Dr. Majeski’s two articles, “Eschatology” and “Women in Ministry.”
Dr. Joani Brandon was selected to be part of the Educational Testing Service Praxis Music Education Advisory Panel. The group will review the alignment with both national and state standards.
Dr. Elizabeth Imafuji was selected by the National Council of Teachers to present her paper, “When Religious Commonplaces Conflict with Writing Program Practices: Overcoming Institutional and Disciplinary Differences” at the annual Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The conference, scheduled for March 25-28, was canceled due to the coronavirus.
Dr. Anna Epperly and Dr. Jeff Trotter were selected to co-present (with Tiffany Van Natta) at the 2020 First Steps Conference scheduled for June 11-12 in Bloomington. Their conference presentation topic was “Thinking about Challenging Behaviors: Easy as A, B, C.” The group was also scheduled for a poster presentation titled, “Family engagement practices of part c early interventionists in Indiana: A quantitative study” at the conference, which was ultimately canceled due to the coronavirus.
April 2020
Dr. Joani Brandon was invited by the American Orff-Schulwerk Association to do a professional development webinar on the history of teacher training in the United States. It was filmed in early April and will be included as a member resource on the AOSA website.
Dr. Joani Brandon’s proposal, “Orff Schulwerk and Conversational Solfege” was accepted by the Feierabend Association for Music Education to be presented at the national conference scheduled for July 2020 in Philadelphia. The conference was postponed until July 2021 due to Covid-19. The session is scheduled to be co-presented by Dr. Brandon’s writing group that published a book on the Feierabend approach and Orff Schulwerk. The group is working on the second volume.
