Article QuickTakes:

The second steppingstone in the Range Rover lineup sees a host of styling and tech tweaks for an early 2024 model year, bringing it more in line with its megabucks siblings.

The 2024 Land Rover Range Rover Velar wears a new grille and headlights, which sit above a fresh front bumper. From the side, the scaled-down Range Rover look — including the brand’s now-hallmark retractable door handles and the “floating” roofline created by dark-tinted window glass and black-finished roof pillars — carries over largely unchanged. LED taillights round things out.

Overall, the tweaks tie the Velar more closely to the latest Range Rover, which hit the market in 2022.

Let’s dive inside to learn more about the 2024 Range Rover Velar — with a verbose name that derives its final word from the Latin velare (to veil or cover up). It’s a name British engineers used to disguise prototypes of the original Range Rover models more than 50 years ago.

2024 Land Rover Range Rover Velar: New Tech, Classic Materials

A new, 11.4-inch curved touchscreen sits behind a glass panel to handle audio, climate, and navigation controls. An updated interface features virtual “buttons” on either side of the screen for quick access to more commonly requested functions.

To reduce distraction, Land Rover says 80% of all tasks can be completed with just two taps from the home screen. The updated system offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility plus integrated Amazon Alexa.

Land Rover has also fitted a wireless charging pad in the center console, and the latest Velar is capable of receiving over-the-air updates when connected to Wi-Fi. Audiophiles will find a 17-speaker Meridian stereo system, too.

All that tech can be combined with an available leather-free interior that sees a wool and polyurethane textile blend draped over the seats. That partially renewable material can be paired with aluminum or wood trim as well.

Range Rover Velar Power and Capability

The 2024 Velar offers two engine choices: a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 247 hp, or a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder paired with a mild-hybrid system good for a combined 395 hp.

The mild-hybrid system makes use of a 48-volt starter-generator that grabs energy that would otherwise be lost during deceleration and pumps it into a lithium-ion battery. That battery, in turn, helps power an electric motor that assists the six-cylinder gas engine to improve acceleration. With the six-cylinder engine, which Land Rover markets as the P400, the automaker estimates a 5.2-second zip to 60 mph.

All models come standard with four-wheel drive with Eco, Comfort, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts, Sand, Dynamic, and Automaticdrive modes that tweak drivetrain, suspension, and stability control systems for different types of terrain.

2024 Velar Pricing

The updated Velar runs just south of $63,000 to start, including a mandatory destination charge. The six-cylinder version costs about $71,000. Depending on the engine, the Velar will be offered in S, SE, and HSE trim levels.
