Deviled eggs are one of those recipes that makes an appearance at all of our family functions. My aunt, the deviled egg-making Queen, always makes the perfect deviled eggs. Her recipe was my first exposure to the perfect deviled eggs, and I’ve been hooked on deviled eggs ever since.

This appetizer can be made in less than an hour and can even be prepped ahead of time. Although deviled eggs are known for large gatherings and crowds, these are the perfect lunch or dinner side dish.

Serve them along with these other appetizer recipes, like Southern Cornbread and Lemon Pepper Chicken Wings.

Ingredients Needed

Southern Deviled Eggs Recipe (2)
  • Eggs – We’ll use the cooked egg whites and yolks in this dish. The egg white will be stuffed with the yolks after they are turned into a creamy filling.
  • Mayonnaise – mayo acts as a binder and helps make the filling creamy.
  • Sweet relish and diced jalapeños – These add flavor to the deviled eggs. Most recipes call for sweet relish or a chopped pickle. I like to add the diced jalapeños for a little kick.
  • Yellow mustard – Added for the flavor. I stick with traditional yellow mustard for the mustard in this recipe.
  • Salt and pepper – to taste.
  • Paprika – sprinkled on top as garnish and additional flavor.

How to make Southern Style Deviled Eggs

Making deviled eggs couldn’t be easier. First, you’ll need to prepare the eggs by cooking them whole and in the shell. I like to boil or pressure cook my eggs.

To boil, place the eggs in a large pot. Cover the eggs with an inch of water. Bring to a boil.

Boil eggs for 7-8 minutes. Remove eggs with a slotted spoon and place them in a bowl of cold water to stop the cooking process. Allow cooling in the water for 5 minutes.

What is the best way to cook eggs for deviled eggs?

You can boil, air fry, bake, steam, grill, or pressure cook the eggs for deviled eggs. My preferred method is to pressure cook or boil them. To pressure cook the eggs, place eggs in a pressure cooker on low pressure for 7 minutes. After 7 minutes, quickly release any remaining pressure.

To air fry the eggs, air fry them on 270 degrees Fahrenheit for about 15 minutes.

Deviled eggs can last in the fridge for 3-4 days.

Can you freeze deviled eggs?

I would not recommend freezing deviled eggs. Egg whites are known to become rubbery after being frozen.
